About the Mott Community College Recall

Recall language was approved against Mott Community College trustees Wendy Wolcott, Janet Couch, and John Daly III by the Genesee County Election Commission on August 1, based on their decision to approve a contract as interim president of Mott Community College for Shaunda Richardson-Snell, despite her lack of relevant experience in the role.

Two board members, Andy Everman and Jeffrey Swanson, are not eligible to be recalled. Their seats are up for re-election in November. Trustee Michael Freeman, who along with Trustee Art Reyes, has served as a voice of reason on this chaotic board, is not running for re-election, so three total seats are up for grabs. Several candidates have filed to run, including Everman and Swanson.

This website has two primary goals:

  • Share information about the recall and signature collection effort;
  • Share information about candidates who can potentially unseat Everman and Swanson in their re-election bids.

The recall task is daunting. We need just under 45,000 valid signatures for each of the three recalled trustees. But it’s not impossible. I have already heard from so many people who are upset and motivated to stop this board. Once signature collection starts (I am anticipating mid-September), we will have 60 days to collect enough valid signatures. If you would be interested in gathering signatures or participating in this effort, please submit your contact information below to receive email updates.

About Me

My name is Patrick Hayes. I’m a dad, a coach, a proud Flint resident, an adjunct faculty member at Mott, and a (literally) next door neighbor of the college. I have the Pistons basketball court a few dozen steps away from Mott’s tennis courts, if anyone wants to come and hoop with the handful of neighborhood kids who play here most days when the weather is good.

My brother is a Mott graduate who won a National Championship on the Mott basketball team, a team I covered for two years in one of my first jobs out of college as a sports reporter at the Flint Journal.

I am not interested in being a local politician. My role in my community is being a good neighbor, being an advocate for my city and the beautiful people who live here, and helping create a world I will be proud for my kids and their friends to inherit. I am organizing this recall because I love and believe in Mott, it’s transformative importance in this community, and my desire to make sure it remains a strong community resource for generations to come. The current board has no vision, no relevant experience, and no actual knowledge of the magic that happens every day on Mott’s campus. It’s time for new leadership that is interested in building on Mott’s incredible legacy rather than tearing it down.
